Personal Message:
In just under 48 hours, I will be taking on an 85.914km run at an ungodly time, where I could have chosen to drive, take a bus, take a taxi, take an uber (I don’t think there’s a flight option yet, but I may stand corrected). Nonetheless, it is surreal and of course knowing myself, I needed to wait to make sure I made it to Durban on time, collected my running pack, but it’s seeming more and more inevitable. Only 2 small hurdles to go - ensure I am up at 3am to get to the start, and navigate a couple of hills between Durban and Pietermaritzburg… Amidst the madness of it all, I have chosen to make this more than a personal challenge (so I feel a little less like 1 of 20,000+ crazy people), but more importantly contribute to something good in memory of a loving, caring, selfless and generous woman who was a pillar of love, strength, kindness and generosity in our family as well as the community at large. In addition to believing in and supporting me and my siblings (I was definitely her favourite), my mother extended her kindness to anyone and everyone who crossed her path. She dedicated her life to nursing and servitude, and was also very active in the fight against HIV/AIDS. In memory and celebration of her life and causes, I would like to dedicate this run to her, and more than that, make a difference in her honour in continuing a fight she passionately believed in.
